Hobby Horse Event in South Australia

The Strathalbyn Show is on and Hobby Horse lovers are invited – Monday 5th October 2026

ALL WELCOME – FREE ENTRY – TO THE HOBBY HORSE JUMPING EQUITATION COMPETITION

The STRATHALBYN SHOW in SOUTH AUSTRALIA invite you enter the Hobby Horse events at their 2026 Show on Monday 5th October.

There will be ‘Come & Try’ running throughout the day on the central oval and a ‘Open Championship’ at 2:00pm for experienced riders. These are open to all and there is no entry fee.

There will also be a ‘Rural Ambassadors Challenge’ at 11:00am for the Rural Ambassadors and a ‘Celebrity Challenge’ at 12:45pm. These are by invitation. 

Working Equitation is a true equestrian discipline where riders manoeuvre their mounts through a series of challenges, for example a small jump, a gate, weaving poles, a bridge etc. Check out this video of working equitation at a high level hobby horse competition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5sDSUZRzqU

All participants will complete the working equitation course, being scored on skill, style, accuracy, decorum etc. Hobby Horses will be supplied, but you are welcome to bring your own! Coaching will be available on the day from 9:30am if you wish to get some practice in prior to the event!

As you know Hobby Horsing is a relatively new and fast growing sport where participants ride a Hobby Horse (stick horse) in a variety of equestrian disciplines, such as show jumping or dressage. It is a highly athletic sport, its popularity growing rapidly across the globe, with over ten national Championships in countries such as Germany, England, The Netherlands, even here in Australia! The world championships have been held annually in Finland since 2012, bringing in over 1,000 competitors! 

Entries for the ‘Open Championship’ are appreciated prior to the event through Showday online – https://showday.online/show/strathalbyn/entry-individual/631623#classes (closing 5pm 30/9/26), however late entries will be accepted on the day, and there is no entry fee.
